Back pain has become common in our society, with 9 out of 10 New Zealanders experiencing back pain at some stage in their lifetime. It is the second leading cause of work absenteeism and results in more lost productivity than any other medical condition.Back pain is a problem and being in pain affects every part of your life.
The causes of back pain are varied and it is important to get your back pain diagnosed and treated as soon as possible especially if the pain persists or reoccurs.
The most common causes for back pain are joint sprains of the back and pelvis. These sprains occur because the back is unable to accommodate to the stress that has been placed on it.If one joint is stiff, stuck or rigid then the surrounding joints will have to compensate so that you can continue with your every day activities as normal.Often it is a small inconspicuous movement that leads to back joint injury.
Osteopathy is effective in treating these injuries by improving the blood supply to the area for faster healing and increasing joint mobility to reduce stiffness and overcompensation of other areas of the body.
Back Care Tips
Stay fit Your body is better conditioned to handle the stresses of everyday life leading to fewer episodes of back pain through regular exercise.
Lifting techniqueThe majority of injuries to lower backs are caused by lifting.Remember to always keep whatever you are lifting or carrying close to your body and directly in front of you.If you are lifting something at a distance from your body or need to twist your back to lift it, your back will become more vulnerable to injury.
SittingAvoid low or soft chairs as these provide no support for your back whilst you are sitting. When sitting for long periods of time it is recommended to get up and move about every 30 minutes
Stop smokingSmoking decreases the blood flow in the body, decreasing the nutrition to your spine and leads to spinal degeneration.
When In Pain
Stay active It has been proven that bed rest for more than a day is no good for your back.Moving around and doing normal physical activities will not harm your back.By being inactive you will reduce your chances of recovery.
SleepingIf you have trouble sleeping due to back pain, try putting a pillow under your knees if you are lying on your back or between your knees if you are lying on your side.
Stay positiveHaving a proactive belief about pain helps the recovery process. Also having strong family and work relationships provides good support while recovering from injury.
