Is Osteopathy ACC (Accident Compensation Corporation) approved?
Osteopaths are approved treatment providers for ACC defined by The Injury Prevention, Rehabilitation, and Compensation Act 2001.When you visit an Osteopath, you will be advised whether or not you may be covered by ACC for the injury.
ACC provides comprehensive, no-fault personal injury cover for all New Zealand residents and visitors from overseas.
Some of the costs associated with treating your injury will be covered by ACC, but you will also need to make a co-payment (additional payment) to cover the full cost of the treatment.
What is the difference between Osteopaths and other professions?
The main difference between osteopathy and other professions is in its philosophy. Osteopaths view and treat the body as a whole.In treating the whole body, the underlying cause of your symptoms are addressed providing you with faster healing and preventing future reoccurrences of your symptoms.
What can I expect during a treatment?
A full case history will be taken to build up a picture of your health status and what could be contributing to your complaint.Every part of your history is relevant.This will be followed by a physical examination to assess the way your body functions and confirm the diagnosis.The diagnosis will be discussed with you along with the treatment plan and expected outcomes.Treatment will involve a number of hands-on techniques to align and improve body function.Advice may be given on posture, stretches and exercises.You may be referred to other health providers for further investigations if appropriate.
Will I need to undress?
At times you may be asked to remove items of clothing.This is to assess the state of the underlying body parts which is very important in the diagnosis of your symptoms.If you are uncomfortable with any part of the consultation we will work within your comfort level.
How long will a treatment take?
Initial consultations will range from between 30-45 minutes with follow-up consultations lasting 20-30 minutes.
How many treatments will I need?
Every individual and injury is different and this will dictate the number of treatments.For simple sprains, often only 2-3 treatments are required.However, if you have been experiencing symptoms for a long time then more treatments may be necessary. During the initial consultation, you will be advised on approximately how many treatments you will require to be symptom free and to stay symptom free.
What training do Osteopaths have?
Osteopaths in New Zealand undergo a 5 year course of study.This involves a 3 year Bachelor degree in Human Biology and a 2 year Master Degree in Osteopathy.Overseas qualifications range from 4 years to 5 years of study.
